SMART stands for self-management and recovery training. SMART is a nonprofit organization with a mission to offer free, self-empowering, mutual-help groups for abstaining from any substance or maladaptive behaviors. SMART is a scientific alternative from traditional spiritual self-help groups.
Whether you're dealing with addictive or compulsive behaviors or substance use, SMART has information, tools, and techniques that may help you replace your self-destructive behaviors with healthier options.
SMART uses techniques from Cognitive behavior Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and helps individuals recognizes unhealthy choices to learn to make better choices. SMART holds that a person's spiritual convictions and religious beliefs are a deeply personal matter. Spirituality may be helpful for some, but they are not a requirement of the SMART program.
SMART Recovery sponsors face-to-face meetings around the world, and daily online meetings. In addition, their online message board and 24/7 chat room are excellent forums to learn about SMART Recovery and obtain addiction recovery support.
