The Emerging Reality of AI Addiction: When a Helpful Tool Becomes a Harmful Habit

Generative Artificial Intelligence, often just called “AI” or “chatbots,” has quickly become a vital part of everyday life. There is a lot of talk about how it is changing our society, but for some people the future is now, and not in a good way. Researchers are starting to see that some of the more vulnerable members of society are falling into what appears to be an addiction to AI. 

For many people, AI is still just a helpful tool. It can save time, answer questions, improve writing, and make daily tasks easier. But for others, AI use is starting to look less like convenience and more like compulsive AI use. What begins as harmless curiosity can turn into a pattern that affects mood, relationships, work, school, and mental health. 

Can AI Really Become an Addiction? 

We’re not here to say AI is inherently bad or harmful to everyone. Like any tool, it can be of great help, but it can also be harmful if misused. More than most tools, AI has the potential to replace healthy human interactions, take too much time from important life tasks, and become obsessive and compulsive.  

Like almost all behavioral addictions, AI addiction is not an officially-recognized condition, yet the familiar hallmarks seem to be in place.1 The most obvious of these is that people who are becoming dependent on AI are seeing a negative impact on their lives, yet they continue the harmful behaviors.  

Here are some warning signs that you or someone you know may be heading into problematic AI use. 

  • Excessive use of AI, especially when relying on it for social interaction 
  • Loss of control over how much time is spent on AI 
  • Using AI to avoid uncomfortable emotions 
  • Resistance to giving up the perceived AI connection 
  • Emotional distress if not able to interact with AI as much as desired 
  • Spending more and more time with it despite the problems it’s causing 
  • Hiding the amount of time spent talking to AI  
  • Pulling away from family, friends, or recovery supports  
  • Relying on AI to make decisions that should involve real people  
  • Using AI to escape stress, loneliness, shame, or boredom 

This is why more researchers are now using phrases like AI addiction, chatbot addiction, and problematic AI use. Even if the formal diagnostic language has not caught up yet, the pattern is becoming easier to recognize. People are not just using AI more. Some are starting to feel like they need it. If these patterns are showing up, it may no longer be simple productivity or curiosity. It may be turning into emotional dependence on AI.  

It’s worth noting that people can swap one addiction for another. Just like some people have been switching from opiate pills or heroin to 7OH, a recent study found that people who engaged in compulsive social media use seem more prone to replacing this with compulsive AI use instead.2  

Risk and Reward 

The greatest risk for AI addiction shows up at the intersection of technology and loneliness. People who are comfortable using technology but not comfortable with social interactions are most in danger of developing dependency. The more isolated and lonely they are, the greater the risk.  

Social anxiety, fear of judgment from others, and social exclusion (real or imagined) only make this worse.3 People experiencing these things may start out using AI to help write a thank you note or a paper, start exploring interesting topics, and then find they are talking to the AI chatbot more and more as though it were a friend.  

One insidious feature of AI that plays into this is that most chatbots are designed to keep the human user engaged for as long as possible. One major way they do this is to agree with and flatter the human user. This can lead to outright encouraging dangerous ideas such as suicidality, mass shootings, racism, and conspiracy theories. AI will say, “Your beliefs are totally understandable,” even when another human would probably provide stronger accountability and set boundaries when the beliefs and attitudes are clearly harmful.  

As we wrote about in a previous post, people who have turned to AI for mental health advice have seen their mental health decline, and there have been multiple suicides linked to AI use. In one case, a teen’s parents allege that an AI chatbot not only didn’t respond appropriately to their son’s talk of self-harm, but it instead offered to help write a suicide note.4 Any competent human mental health professional would have immediately flagged a teen talking about self-harm, and urged them to reach out for help, such as by dialing 988, which puts anyone in the U.S. in touch with a mental-health hotline. 

Limitless approval and encouragement hits reward centers in our brains, often without us realizing it. People like to be flattered and told all their ideas make sense. They like to hear that their actions are justified. They like having a friend who either agrees with them or at least disagrees in a very agreeable way. As social animals, this feels good.  

For those who struggle socially or feel the weight of loneliness, this positive interaction can become intoxicating. For some, particularly those who are most vulnerable, this can go far enough that the users are relying on AI for their primary social interactions, with some going so far as to fall in love with their chatbots. Researchers have found that the more intense the relationship, the more the people give away information about themselves, and the more they lack human support, the more their wellbeing goes down.5  

As more research has been done on love addiction,6 it can be argued that AI is almost perfectly suited to prey on this addictive tendency. More studies are needed in this area, but given the overlap between symptoms of love addiction and AI addiction, it seems increasingly likely that each can feed the other in ways that are dangerous.
