New Years is the time for resolutions. There is no better time than the present to make new goals for yourself and set yourself up for success in order to achieve them. Now a resolution doesn’t need to be something large – it can be something simple, such as meditating 5 minutes everyday or waking up ten minutes earlier. Either way, take some time to sit and think about what goals – big and small – you want to set for yourself and ensure you write them down.
Many people set out to achieve big goals at the start of a new year, but they aren’t choosing goals that can be accomplished or aren’t setting themselves up to achieve them. When setting a New Year’s resolution, it is important to cut through the noise and focus on what is important to you. Ask yourself what you want to achieve and decide on what you are truly willing to focus your energy on. Choose a goal that is going to make a real difference for you and motivate you to keep at it.
Now that you know what you want to achieve, set yourself up for success! If you know that you want to meditate 5 minutes a day, block out that time on your calendar daily to ensure nothing takes importance over it. You could also ensure to block out time at a time of day when you know you typically aren’t busy – like right after waking up or just before bed. If you have goals you’d like to achieve, keep reading to learn some tips on how to set yourself up for success. If you are someone who isn’t quite sure yet what you want some of your resolutions to be, then keep reading as well and we can hopefully provide you with some great starting points!
Head into the new years with a healthy lifestyle. Whether you’re sober or not, it is important for yourself to stay health – especially in times like the present. A great resolution to have for yourself is to improve upon your health. Begin with simple changes, like adding 1-2 more servings of vegetables to your daily food intake. Another great option that has so many amazing benefits is to ensure you are drinking enough water daily. Water is such an important key to our health and such an easy way to improve upon yours! It is said that we should be drinking half of our body weight in ounces every single day. This may sound daunting at first, but the more water you intake daily, the more your body will crave it.
Exercise! No matter how big or small a piece of your day, exercise is a great resolution to have to ensure your year will be a positive one. Exercise is a great way to also add structure to your day. Whether waking up early to get in a weight-lifting session, taking an extended walk on your lunch break, or attending a nightly spin class, all of these are perfect ways to add fitness to your routine and look your best in the new year.
Want to start smaller? Maybe think about journaling 5-10 minutes per day. We don’t necessarily mean that you should begin keeping a diary, unless you are into that idea – then go for it! – but many people journal as a way to continue to keep track of their goals, their progress, or even their day to day moods. Another great idea is a gratitude journal. Taking time daily to write down a few things that you are grateful for and perhaps a few additional things that you hope to work on or improve upon for yourself.
Every day is a great day to start getting sober, but the New
Year is an obvious starting point that some people use to kick off a new
lifestyle. We all know that we have good intentions when making a resolution,
but keeping our word, just like maintaining sobriety is a daily task and responsibility.
Many of us may not even make resolutions or we may be discouraged because we
were unable to keep our past resolutions. Be encouraged by those around you who
share the stories of making their goal happen, like weight loss, or starting a
new career path.
Give yourself some grace. It is said that a new habit takes nearly 30 days to build and become a routine. Those first thirty days will be the hardest, as you must convince yourself that this goal is worth achieving and that you will be able to accomplish it. Rome wasn’t built in a day – neither will be your new and improved self.
No matter what, we should all make an effort to make 2021 a better year than ever. Keeping a positive attitude and setting ourselves up for success will be key in ensuring that happens.
