What Is Holistic Addiction Treatment?

July 30th, 2019

When it comes to treating addiction, there are many different forms of treatment and many different approaches to take. One of those being a holistic approach. When examining the approach that many different addiction treatment centers take across the country, they are often working to treat the addiction, ignoring any underlying issues that may have caused or fueled the addiction.

A holistic approach to addiction treatment involves looking at the individual as a whole. This way we are looking at the mind, body and spirit in depth in order to see how those connect and how each is impacted by the addiction. It also involves introducing as few new chemicals into the body as possible. So, typically when you are embarking on a holistic approach to treat addiction, there will be no drug intervention in terms of detox.

With more individuals gaining interest in alternative medicines and practices, holistic addiction treatment is becoming more popular as a component to addiction treatment.

Practices of holistic treatment within a rehab facility can include:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Exercise
  • Proper Nutrition
  • Art Therapy
  • Massage

There are often some common obstacles that individuals face while in addiction treatment, such as lack of sleep and emotional stress. Holistic treatments are a great way to alleviate these obstacles, allowing you to focus on your recovery and other aspects of your treatment plan. Often times, our anxiety and/or stress can feed our addiction. By alleviating these issues with holistic treatments like a nutritious, balanced diet and exercise, we allow our bodies to find synergy. This in turn helps us to focus on other pieces of our treatment plan.

In addition, the use of holistic therapies can help individuals feel more at ease, more productive in their treatment response, and generally better able to cope with the challenges of detox and rehab. For these reasons, holistic practices can be a positive complement to the more research-based treatment routes that experts consider to have a greater chance of resulting in lasting sobriety.

One of the best parts of holistic treatment is that you can take the practice home with you. When participating only in traditional addiction treatment, such as talk therapy and group therapy, you cannot always bring this practice back home into your daily life. With holistic practices, like yoga and meditation, these are things you can do daily in order to maintain sobriety post-treatment. This most likely is a big contributor as to why holistic methods of treating substance-abuse have better long-term outcomes.

At Windmill Wellness Ranch, we use holistic therapies as a compliment to the other services we offer. When seeking treatment at Windmill Wellness Ranch, we understand that not every treatment works for everyone. This is why we offer as many treatment options as we can in order to help as many individuals as we can. At Windmill Wellness Ranch, an individual can participate in talk therapy, group therapy, EDMR, and iTMS, in addition to holistic treatment methods.

We have found that having a holistic approach to treatment when combined with more traditional offerings creates a well-balanced recovery path for our patients and provides them with the necessary tools to maintain sobriety long term.
